Animation

One of the joys of being able to draw is that every once in a while you get chance to have some fun and let loose with the pencil and get stuck into some animation.

The brief for the animation was how to represent the rise and fall of financial markets. After some initial storyboarding I came up with the idea of a character trying to cycle up a mountain (or in this case a graph line). After trying and failing the first time, the second attempt has our hero happen across Bob's Garage in the desert wilderness where he helpfully gets our hero back on track.

I hand drew all the elements for the animation and gave them a digital make-over in Photoshop before importing into After Effects for a bit of 3D magic.

These are taken from my little sketchbook from when I was travelling a few years back. The main study above of the Cyclo Man with an impossibly large cargo attached is a nod to the Hayao Miyazaki classic 'Howl's Moving Castle'.

I've included them as a bit of fun, but also to show that I can tell one end of a pencil from the other.

The client was looking for a clean and unfussy design that allowed customers to find out more about the service.

I was involved with the UI design for the Business Banking site and also with creating the look and feel for the flash account demo application.

Take for example this work I produced for a pitch to Crown whilst at LOVE. We went with the thought that painting your house isn't always an exact science and that most of us are quite happy to let a professional do the hard work. Our take on the whole thing was that it doesn't matter if you're a professional or beginner at decorating, the fact that you're getting stuck into making your house special is the thing that matters.

We wanted to create a site that had lots of personality and really felt like it wasn't overly complex to use or get inspiration from. We had a playful bit of interactivity allowing the user to paint the walls of their virtual home too, which was handy as digital paint is easier to clean up than the real thing.

Sadly, we didn't win the pitch on this occasion, but, I was really proud of the work I produced for it, hence why it appears here.

One of my main desires for the site was to really push the imagery of the work they have produced, hence the inclusion of high-res images in the background of the site.

The site was built by the very talented Mr. Andrew Disley at Simplified

One element of the site that was particularly cool was the interactive race viewer, which use GPS coordinates from the boats and overlaid the data via Google Maps. Each race team had its own dedicated blog area that could post friends and family updates of their progress.

I was responsible for the UI design and look of the site. I was very keen that the site should be big and bold and really be a showcase for the once in a lifetime challenge of braving the elements and heading out onto the ocean.
